In
this section we introduce the major characteristics of RISC and CISC processor.
The characteristics of them are given below:
RISC
characteristics: The concept of RISC architecture
involves an attempt to reduce execution time by simplifying the instruction set
of the computer.
The
major characteristics of a RISC processor are:
(i)
RISC
machines require lesser time for its design implementation.
(ii)
RISC
processor consumes less power and clock cycle.
(iii)
RISC
instructions are executed in single clock cycle, which most of CISC requires
more than one clock cycle.
(iv)
RISC
system are more popular.
(v)
The
current technology RISC processors support the floating point data type.
(vi)
RISC
machines mostly uses hardwired control unit.
CISC
characteristics: The instructions in a typical CISC
processor provide direct manipulation of operands residing in memory. In
summary the major characteristics of CISC processor are-
(i)
A
large member of instructions typically from 100 to 250 instruction.
(ii)
Some
instructions that perform specialized tasks and are used in frequently.
(iii)
A
large variety of addressing modes typically from 5 to 20 different modes.
(iv)
Variable
length instruction formats.
(v)
Instruction
that manipulate operands in memory.
