Main memory: The
main memory in a computer is called Random Access Memory. It is also known as
RAM. This is the part of the computer that stores operating system software,
software applications and other information for the central processing unit
(CPU) to have fast and direct access when needed to perform tasks.
Characteristics
of Main memory:
(i) These are
semiconductor memories.
(ii) It is known
as the RAM.
(iii) Usually
volatile memory.
(iv) Data is
lost in case power is switched off.
(v) It is the
working memory of the computer.
(vi) Faster than
Secondary memories.
(vii) A computer
cannot run without the Primary memory.
(viii) It is as
vital as the processor chip to a computer system.
