Frame
Relay (FR):
Frame Relay (FR) is a packet oriented WAN technology use for connecting remote
offices over the internet or WAN. Frame relay provides the dedicated connection
called the PVC which is used to form logical end to end links mapped over a
physical network.
The
features of frame relay are as follow:
(i)
Frame
relay provides connection oriented virtual circuit service.
(ii)
Frame
relay can detect transmission errors.
(iii)
Frame
relay connections are often given a committed information rate (CIR), which
provide guarantees that the connection will always support the committed rate
or bandwidth.
(iv)
Frame
length is variable the maximum frame length allowed in the 1600B above.
(v)
Frame
Relay is a broad band packet switching and has the transfer rate up to 44.6
Mbps.
(vi)
Error
rate is very low with frame relay using optical fiber as the transmission medium
reducing the error check for the overhead and improves the network throughput.
(vii)
Frame
relay uses variable length frame based asynchronous multiplexing technology
therefore it is used for data transmission and not best suitable for voice and
video transmission.
